Daily Health Tips update for August 2:
Nothing says summer like a frosty ice cream sandwich. But there’s
no reason to spend a fortune on the not-so-good-for-you treats
peddled by the neighborhood ice cream truck. You can make your own
with good quality ice cream and cookies.
Whether you choose to get your ingredients from a natural health
shop or make them yourself from scratch, having a stash of these
ice cream treats will be a welcome surprise you can share with
neighborhood kids or...

Daily Health Tips update for June 2:
Even if you’re not gluten-intolerant, chances are you know someone
who is and at some point you’ll want to prepare a meal, snack or
dessert that everyone can enjoy. Coconut is considered
hypoallergenic and is safe to use for most people.
Coconut
flour is naturally low in digestible fiber, contains no gluten
and is a good source of fiber and protein. Coconut flour has
different properties than wheat flour, so it can’t be substituted
equally. Here’s an easy...

Gluten
free shopping can be a difficult task when you are used to your
food tasting a certain way. My step-brother went gluten free last
year due to some troubles with his diet. It’s no easy task for a
high school student to drop gluten when used to the typical teenage
diet of pizza and tacos, but he managed to change enough of his
diet to where he wasn’t feeling miserable after a meal. Ever since
Thomas went gluten free I’ve tried to find new ways for him to
enjoy the occasional treats that go...

There are a growing number of books addressing Irritable Bowel
Syndrome (IBS) these days, suggesting that the condition is
becoming more prevalent. And there are a variety of approaches for
healing, or at least controlling, intestinal distress and
discomfort.
For example, in “
Overcoming
IBS,” by Dr. Jonathan Berkowitz, the BRAT diet is presented.
Easy enough to remember, it stands for Bananas, Rice, Apples and
Toast. These fiber rich foods have been shown in studies to help
those who suffer with...

There is an increasing number of people each
year that are choosing a gluten free diet and lifestyle
voluntarily. This number has increased to over 15 million people
and growing. Some require a gluten free diet medically, most
notably those who suffer from celiac disease—an immune disease that
damages the small intestines. Others that...

Daily Health Tips Update for Sunday, September 19: You’ve
probably heard how some people cannot tolerate gluten, so they
build gluten-free shopping lists each week. But many of these
same people are also avoiding casein, a protein found in all bovine
milk and milk products. Why? Many people are allergic to dairy and
dairy products. Plus, some anecdotal evidence indicates that this
dietary approach may help people with autism spectrum disorders.
Unfortunately, some non-dairy foods or milk...

Daily Health Tips Update for Tuesday, September 7: For people
with celiac disease, every food they eat has to be carefully
scrutinized, watching for any trace of gluten. Gluten free shopping
is second nature to celiacs, a skill developed over time. But
recently on the
Swanson Health Products
Facebook page, a customer posted a question concerning
maltodextrin, a common food additive. She wanted to know whether
the maltodextrin in a specific protein powder was derived from
corn, potatoes or...

Many people in today's world look to celebrities or the media to
tell them how something should be done. But I prefer sticking with
the everyday person. When it comes to recipes, I know that there is
a vast variety of information available on the Internet. Whether
I'm looking for something delicious and nutritious for myself, or
if I have to do some gluten free shopping for my step-brother,
I know that the possibilities are endless on the Net.
While I've gone many places for recipes, including...

I do my shopping at a regular grocery store, not a health and
nutrition store. Luckily, I have the willpower of a stubborn
2-year old while I'm in the grocery store. I bring a list with me
and have no problems bypassing the junk food aisles. I mainly shop
the perimeter, where the dairy, veggies, fruit and meat are
located. I also buy whole wheat bread products. I only venture to
the middle of the store to get nuts and tuna, never down the junk
food / pop asile. When I get home, all I have are...
