Cut Your Heart Disease Risk in Just 15 Minutes

Daily Health Tips update for February 14:

We hear all about cholesterol and its role in cardiovascular health, but the key component of good cholesterol comes from controlling the amount of blood fats known as triglycerides. If your triglyceride levels are too high, your risk of heart disease doubles.

A lipoprotein analysis can be done with a simple blood test, and a normal triglyceride level is a number less than 150 mg per deciliter of blood.  If your results are higher than normal, try these tips to reduce your triglycerides and heart disease risk:

  • Exercise in short bursts of 10 minutes a day. This method is especially helpful in reducing stubborn triglyceride levels.
  • Devote 15 to 30 minutes to yourself and de-stress each day. Taking this time to do something you enjoy can help reduce your stress levels and in turn, reduce your triglyceride levels.
  • Replace soda with green or black tea. Sugary drinks trigger surges in blood triglycerides, so simply replacing it with tea (without sugar) can help lower these levels.
