Negative self-talk is toxic. It’s especially toxic when you’re trying to improve your physical health. If you made a resolution to be more active or to reduce the numbers on your bathroom scale, use a few of the hints below to stay positive and focused on your goals:
- Face forward. Don’t look back at your past mistakes or shortcomings. Keep focused on the future by reminding yourself how far you’ve come and make small changes to your daily routine to help cheer yourself forward.
- “Can’t” isn’t a word. Drop it from your vocabulary, period. This negative mindset works against you, so instead of reiterating all of things you can’t eat or do, remind yourself of the things you can eat and do.
- Don’t dwell on numbers. It’s easy to focus on that number on the scale each day, but try to resist the urge. Instead, take time to focus on the short-term, action-oriented goals that lead to the result (i.e., number on the scale). Setting those smaller, achievable goals will help reinforce your efforts in a positive way.
