Americans are giving more thought these days to what they’re
eating. For those who consume animal products, though, there is a
growing awareness of—and concern over—what their food has
been eating.
The Union of Concerned Scientists discussed
industrial animal feed on their website, and what they have to
say could surprise you … and possibly make you reconsider your
grocery list.
Common ingredients in factory farm animal feed can include:
- Same species meat
- Diseased animals
- Feathers, hair, skin,...

We're pretty keen on black beans here at Swanson. They show up in
expert queries (
Are Black Beans a Superfood?), recipes
(
Black Bean Burgers), and the Swanson Health
blog (
Ben's
5-Part Exposé). Considering they're rich in fiber, have a low
glycemic index, and are packed with antioxidants, minerals,
protein and iron, it's no surprise we love this nutritious, natural
organic food.
Early last month,
I wrote about an article in Bicycling magazine
that discussed nutrition for cyclists. The article...

A while back, Swanson Health Products sent out an email asking
about customers’ favorites: what we carry and what people wished we
carried. I finally finished sifting through the tens of thousands
of responses and decided to use the Swanson Health Products Blog
here to share with you what I found. (Rest assured, people here
who actually make decisions on what we carry did their own review
of the responses.)
There were a lot of items and brands being requested that I
hadn’t heard of. One of those...

We've
all heard it before: "Soda is bad for you! It rots your teeth! It's
empty calories!" etc, etc. But I came across this graphic today
that quantifies the 'bad for you' details in a really impactful
way.
The first thing that caught my attention was the association with
asthma. Last month, a friend of mine in his early thirties died
from the lack of oxygen caused by an asthma attack. It was
heartbreaking and sudden and shocking -- you just don't think of
asthma as something people
die from....

Since these Swanson Health Products health blogs are supposed to be
about natural health and nutrition,
supplement information, wellness anecdotes, etc., I can
sum up my health and wellness by saying simply, "Hey! I
survived!"
I completed a two-day, 150-mile fundraising bike ride for the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society this past weekend. The North
Dakota ride was called "Ride The Wind." It would be more
appropriately named "Ride INTO The Wind" because I swear,
every time we turned and went a...

I
woke up ridiculously early all weekend. For once, I was happy about
that because it meant I was awake to watch the end of the Tour de
France. It’s anticlimactic the way you know who the winner is
before the final day, and I was disappointed that I missed all the
big crashes of the early stages, but still – I got to see a lot of
recaps and listen to Phil Ligget. Love that guy’s voice.
In any case, while I’ll never be a
serious cyclist, Bicycling Magazine recently put out an article
with a bunch...

If I’m hungry, I’m not going to sit down with a stack of
cookbooks and a mental list of the ingredients I just might have on
hand and try to come up with …. ugh! Even describing the process is
more effort than I want to put into cooking. More often than not
I’ll make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich or a bean-and-cheese
burrito and call it good. Beans are healthy, right? Close
enough.
However, a month ago I declared that I was going to get serious
about getting in better shape for my wedding this...

About a month ago, I wrote about a fundraiser bike ride I’m
participating in this summer. With just over a month to go, I
wanted to share with you the natural health vitamins and
supplements I’ve found to be useful.
At the end of May, Swanson Health
Products sponsored the Health & Fitness Expo at the 2010 Fargo
Marathon. It was our third year doing so, and we’ve become
known for handing out tons of great samples to runners and their
supporters. While I was helping get our booth set up, I...

I mentioned in my bio that I try to buy cruelty-free products
whenever possible, so I wanted to share with you a couple of my
favorite animal-friendly finds in the world of all natural health
products.
Nature’s Gate
Colloidal Oatmeal Moisturizing Lotion is my new favorite
moisturizer. You might remember oatmeal baths from childhood bouts
of sunburn or poison ivy. Same concept. Colloidal oatmeal has
natural anti-itch properties, which makes it perfect for dry winter
skin. This lotion has a...

I just registered for a two-day,
150-mile bike ride. Yikes.
I am not a serious cyclist by any means. My exposure to the sport
mainly consists of looking at the pretty scenery while watching the
Tour de France from the comfort of my couch. But, this is for
a good cause -- we're raising money for the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society. My fiance bikes a lot and has done this ride for
several years. While he has been asking me to do it, too, I don't
think he's sure I will -- or can. Well you don't...
